For a long time, Alsace has been known for its outstanding brandy, and now it is winning fame for its whisky. With its own PGI since 2015, the region is home to a dozen distilleries, including Hepp, which is located near the German border. After growing up in a family of home distillers, René Hepp set up a distillery in his own name in the 1970s. Today run by his grandson Yannick, the Hepp distillery has produced 100% Alsatian whisky since 2007. The cask selected by the & Fine Spirits team was aged in a 2014 ex-Banyuls cask and combines Alsatian distillation skills with the elegance of Pyrenean fortified wine.

the particularly rich nose transports us to an Alsation pastry shop. Aromas of spice bread, liqueur wine and candied fruit escape from the glass (bitter orange, fig, prune). Allowed to breathe, the spices become more intense. Clove, cardamom and cinnamon mix with notes of leather and blonde tobacco.

Unctuous and oily. Burnt caramel, kola nut and stewed peach add their signature to a full-bodied and generous attack. Next, the spices seize the mid-palate (vanilla, clove, pepper, papri- ka) before making way for a more sweet pastry register. We find the same candied fruit cake from the nose, as well as walnut cake.

with moderate length, the finish reconnects with the nose. Spice bread, candied fruit and cigar box bring the tasting to a close. After a few minutes, patient tasters will be able to enjoy persistent notes of macadamia nut.
