Located just a few miles from Elgin, Benriach is surrounded by famous distilleries, with the Longmorn distillery heading the list. With their austere appearance, its buildings make a stark contrast to the very fruity and generous character of its single malt. This bottling boasts a strong personality and takes us back to an era in which many single malts in the Speyside region were often lightly peated. And yet, refusing to be confined to the nostalgia of times gone by, it generously invites us to explore particularly complex olfactory and gustatory lands that presage a radiant future.

Colour: topaz.

Description

both firm and unctuous. A subtle mix of malted barley, acacia honey, fresh walnut and almond, the initial nose reveals incredible depth. Allowed to breathe, apricot and aromatic plants (verbena, sage) bring even more nobility to the aromatic palette. To really make an impact, it then becomes increasingly heady (hyacinth, rose poivrée) and spicy (ginger, nutmeg).

clean, full of energy. The superbly herbaceous (straw, barley) attack is also slightly earthy, almost peaty and very liquoricey (black). Notes of turmeric and cocoa powder then bring lots of charm to a mid-palate that is also delicately salty. At the end of the palate, the oloroso sherry’s influence is underscored by dried fruits (date, fig). In the background, noble cask flavours bring us into the distillery warehouses.

long, concentrated. The start of the finish is just as evocative as the end of the palate, inviting us on a rustic, countryside journey. Flavours of freshly worked soil and wild flowers appear in perfect harmony with spearmint. Becoming increasingly oily, the mouthfeel has a wonderful velvety softness. The retro-nasal olfaction is then very fruity (apple, grape) and roasted (tobacco). A true ode to malted barley, the empty glass gets straight to the point.
